Changing your AC filter regularly improves air quality and system efficiency.

When it comes to keeping your home cool and your cooling system running smoothly, one of the simplest and most important tasks is to change your AC filter routinely. It’s easy to overlook, but this small piece of maintenance can make a significant impact on your home’s comfort, air quality, and energy efficiency.

How to change AC filter

If you’ve never cleaned or replaced a filter – or it’s been a while – fear not! Here’s a helpful guide on how to do it right, and why it matters:

1. Turn Off Your AC System

For safety, always switch the system off at the thermostat before attempting to access the filter.

2. Locate the Filter

It’s usually found in the air handler, typically installed in a homes’ attics. If you’re unsure about that, check your system’s manual or look it up online using the make and model for reference.

3. Remove the Old Filter

Slide it out carefully and take note of the arrow showing airflow direction.

4. Check Filter Size

The size is printed on the edge of the old filter (e.g., 16x20x1). For your convenience, purchase a few at a time so you always have at least one replacement filter ready to go.

5. Insert the New Filter

Slide it into the slot with the airflow arrow pointing in the correct direction.

6. Turn the System Back On

That’s it—you’re done!

Why Changing Your Air Filter Is So Important

As air circulates through your home, the filter traps dust, pet dander, pollen, and other airborne particles before they reach system components or the air you breathe.

Here’s what can happen if you don’t change your filter regularly:

  • Reduced Airflow: A clogged filter restricts the flow of air, forcing your AC system to work harder to cool your home. This increases energy use and your utility bills.
  • Increased Wear and Tear: Over time, a dirty filter can cause unnecessary strain on your system, leading to overheating, frozen coils, or even breakdowns.
  • Poor Air Quality: When a filter is dirty, it can no longer trap pollutants effectively, which can aggravate allergies, asthma, and respiratory issues.
  • Shortened System Lifespan: Since a problem-ridden system ages faster than those faithfully maintained, regular filter changes can help extend its effective lifespan.

Changing your filter is a quick, inexpensive way to improve performance, reduce costs, and breathe cleaner air.
