Here’s the Next Generation of AC Refrigerants: R-32 and R-454B
Two new refrigerants — R-32 and R-454B — have been developed to replace R-410A. Both have significantly lower GWPs, meeting current and future environmental standards, and have shown excellent performance in lab and field testing.
R-454B: The New Refrigerant Preferred by Most
Most HVAC manufacturers in the U.S. are building their new systems with R-454B due to these primary benefits:
- Lower environmental impact: With a GWP of just 467, R-454B’s global warming potential is nearly 80% less than R-410A and well below the EPA’s 700 GWP threshold.
- Easier transition from R-410A: R-454B operates similarly to R-410A, which means HVAC technicians can service and install new systems without major retraining or changes in equipment. And that saves you money.
- This advanced refrigerant enables AC systems to operate more efficiently, resulting in improved cooling performance and lower energy consumption. By upgrading to a system with R-454b, you can enjoy enhanced comfort while saving money on lower energy bills.
What About My System with R-410A?
While new AC systems come with one of the two next-generation refrigerants there is still an ample supply of R-410A on hand should your current system require a re-charge. R-41-A has not been banned from use…it simply has been replaced in new system manufacturing.
